Broken down barn in the mist

I've been looking at work by Sam Hyde Harris. Oh--those illustrators--what exceptional painters they are! In particular, I am drawn to Hyde's subtle colors. I've seen several of his paintings where he employs lots of atmospheric haze or fog. It is a challenge to paint close values on the light side--but I thought I would give it a whirl.

Oil on 5x7 gessoed board.

Its a shame that 'those illustrators' have always been relegated to a second class status in the art world. In an ironic twist, it is often the illustrator who's iconic images leave a permanent imprint on our retinas like musicians who create a song that becomes part of the personal soundtrack for so many lives. I saw a show of NC Wyeth recently. We owe a huge debt to his color, composition and renditions of the 'adventurous life'.

Celeste, you always inspire us with your study and practice. Close values increase the feeling of abandonment in the scene. Not prettied up. I especially like and respect that! Kvan

High key values can be very effective and often produce a pleasantly mysterious effect, like yours does. It's like looking through the veil of fog and wondering what's behind it. Another beautiful painting by Celeste!

Oh Celeste! I think this is so beautiful! I often see similar scenes out here in the rural areas where I live. I love the morning mists and they do magical things to colors. You've handled this so wonderfully.

The haze gives a morning dew freshness to this!
Old barns are always fun.
