Life painting at "The Canvas" Art Bar & Bistro

Last Monday a few PPASP-ers went to The Canvas (1800 NW Upshur) for the free life drawing/painting session from 6:30-8:30 pm. This week I decided to go check it out. It is a great space, we had a very competent (and interesting looking) model and they have an excellent menu along with wine & beer. Remarkably, if you forget any supplies, or arrive without any, The Canvas even provides an art supply store where you'll be able to pick up anything you need. The model is free (but it is customary to tip her). If you are in Portland and you like figure drawing/painting, The Canvas gets my wholehearted recommendation! (I think it is every Monday evening). Painting: Celeste Bergin,Chelsea, Oil on canvas panel, 12 x 16 inches.

Nice job with the painting, Celeste. I absolutely love the shot of you painting with the model in the background. Too cool!

I think your portrait is beautiful, Celeste. There is an air of mystery, of intellect, and of a rather 1960's vibe too. I love it!

What a totally cool idea!! Portland must be a great place to be an artist. Well- you're there- so of course it is! Great painting too.

Nice little painting, Celeste! She is an interesting model and her outfit must have been a challenge (would be for me!!). Sounds like a great place to go to paint and enjoy company.

Hi Celeste,

Yet another reason to feel jealous re community opportunities available to artists in a large city, especially Portland!

Hi, Celeste. Nice portrait. The forms read well, and I love the yellow hat and glasses. She looks like she was fun to paint. So nice to have a good model.

Great post. Sure wish The Canvas would have been there when I was living in Portland. I agree with Don, that is a great photo with you painting and the model in the background. I wonder if the model always dresses like that? Very busy outfit ... had to be a challenge to paint, huh?

What a wonderful encouragement for artists to get together and have a model and materials at hand! I can see that the model was interesting, Celeste. You captured her poise, maturity and dignity well!
