Thursday!

My art friend Mark Larsen hosted a breakfast at Bread and Ink this morning.  A topic discussed was paintings that hit and paintings that miss. I brought in a stack of paintings that I felt "just" missed. Close, but no cigar. It was fun to talk about what went wrong. The painting above is probably my favorite in my stack of paintings that missed. The tree takes up half of the panel (vertically).......but the more I look at it,  the more I believe it has enough good qualities to override that compositional flaw.

Painting: Celeste Bergin, Tree on the River, oil on 6x8 canvas panel

...and here is a little Chet Baker for Christmas:

I don't know how you could have pt this one in the miss pile, it doesn't belong there at all

I like the way the trees are, Celeste! Thank you for the song...his playing instantly reminded me of Chuck Mangione (remember him?)...

I think I forgot what I was going to say right in the middle of a thought on my email this morning. I like the idea of painting and/or drawing daily. For me it is nigh unto impossible though. I'm so exhausted after work that I'm lucky to drag myself through the bath tub. I shouldn't be, but I suspect it is the fibromyalgia that sends me there...

Thanks for the link to our buddy Chet. We always kind of chuckle when he starts singing.

I like the composition. The idea that you are standing there looking across the water and underneath that tree is very appealing. I am sure though that you got a lot of great feedback yesterday. Lucky girl:)

I really like compositional challenges, and you have mastered this one-balanced the vertical beautifully by the widths/horizontals of the tree foliage as well as the square brush shapes in the negative space-please take out of the 'miss' pile ASAP!

Great brush work, nuanced use of color (love the touch of orange among the blue), great glazing build-up of clouds, terrific sense of aerial depth. Most of all, freshness and life. Put it in your happy stack!

Have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year. And thanks for all the support of my work youve given during the year, Celeste.

Warmest wishes
Harry
