My Birthday (Dec 26)! I went to Art Discussion Thursday (see what everyone brought HERE).... THEN I had lunch with Dave Gallup (thanks, Dave)....THEN I had a hot chocolate stop at Songbird with Dave Burbach ..THEN we drove over to Movie Madness to pick up some art films. THEN we watched Seraphine and THEN had a piece of my brownie birthday cake. It was phone calls, cards and gifts all day long...THANKS everyone--for the perfect birthday! :)
The light of the Christmas star to you. The warmth of home and hearth to you. The cheer and goodwill of friends to you. The hope of a child-like heart to you. The joy of a thousand angels to you. Merry Christmas!

I'm just using color notes here for this oil study... and I'm thinking of painting something along these lines on a bigger canvas. The close values in the foreground and the complimentary colors (violet and yellow) show promise!
I wonder who told me about cleaning a glass palette with denatured alcohol. Was it Tim Young? Well, whoever it was...Thank you! It works like magic. Yes, it cuts the cleaning time in half.
Here are mah katz and I taking a cozy siesta on the green chair. (You know...this is a situation that I deem pretty 'bloggable').

When I first took drawing class (way back a zillion years ago) I had a thorough dislike for a method called 'blind contour drawing'. (Blind contour is drawing while looking at the subject and not looking at the paper). I remember the teacher would bellow "Blind Contour Everyone!"...and I would groan uugghhhh. I suffered through those sessions, longing to look at my paper. I seldom liked the results.
Well! Recently, however, I started drawing blind contour in my little sketchbook. Why, I don't know..I can't account for why I appreciate it now...but I do!
This is the reservoir in Mt. Tabor Park...right next to where I live.
(I'm glad I hopped out of the car to "blind contour" sketch the Reservoir gatehouse...and I know my old drawing teacher would approve).
Do you have paintings of your own....that you especially like? This is one of mine. It's from the past, but since I don't have a new painting, I thought it would be ok to re-post/re-visit this one. I like how there is so little specific in it...it's inexplicably dreamy.

I found this great article about Notan and painting by Mitch Albala. It's such a smart way to approach painting!

Looking around for something to do today I came across this start (probably from a year ago). I think it may be Sargent-inspired...but I don't remember what I originally used for a reference. I added more paint to it and just made stuff up. It's painted on Arches paper. I like the light and dark!
