Christmas Eve

The light of the Christmas star to you. The warmth of home and hearth to you. The cheer and goodwill of friends to you. The hope of a child-like heart to you. The joy of a thousand angels to you. Merry Christmas!

Monday....(and an 'art tip')!

I'm just using color notes here for this oil study... and I'm thinking of painting something along these lines on a bigger canvas. The close values in the foreground and the complimentary colors (violet and yellow) show promise!

I wonder who told me about cleaning a glass palette with denatured alcohol. Was it Tim Young? Well, whoever it was...Thank you! It works like magic. Yes, it cuts the cleaning time in half.

Here are mah katz and I taking a cozy siesta on the green chair. (You know...this is a situation that I deem pretty 'bloggable').

I drew this Sargent copy today.  Who was this guy? Well, nice hat.... man from yesteryear and nice moustache too.

Mt Tabor Tuesday

The little cigar-pochade box is so compact! Perfect for doing small sketches.

This is a value study that I painted today with Ultramarine blue, transparent red oxide and white. I might do a color version next. I like how it turned out.

Today was the last day to see the Lucinda Parker show at the Laura Russo Gallery. The paintings look absolutely great in such a beautiful space.

...and it's fairly impossible to resist sitting on the center bench.....(a perfect place to quietly take in the colors and shapes).

This Sargent sketch was so fun...I'm thinking of doing a painting version of it.

Here I am sharing my corner "sketch station" with Mufasa.

Earlier today Dave and I walked to Montavilla. Here he is taking a photo of a glove stuck on a stick in a yard.

Here's my Spitfire friend that I visit whenever we walk to Montavilla...  She's very much like my beloved Spitfire**.

(**'Honey' in her toasty dry garage...waiting for Summer!) I love her like a person!

It is rewarding to sketch from my big Sargent book...because I see over and over how Sargent used darks to draw interest and to hold shapes together. I'll add this to my Sargent project

Here's my corner sketch station..... Daisy commandeered my stool.

I'm re-visiting this sunflower painting....it's festive, isn't it? (It's got a buyer and it's back on my easel...just to make a few touch up changes).

Our art discussion group met today and the suggested topic was painting from memory or imagination. I don't do much of that..but I gave it a whirl (for the sake of the discussion).

This painting has to do with a memory I have of being brought (as a child) to a Catholic hospital at night. To see what everyone else brought....go HERE.

Simple Pleasures!

When I first took drawing class (way back a zillion years ago) I had a thorough dislike for a method called 'blind contour drawing'. (Blind contour is drawing while looking at the subject and not looking at the paper). I remember the teacher would bellow "Blind Contour Everyone!"...and I would groan uugghhhh.  I suffered through those sessions, longing to look at my paper. I seldom liked the results.

Well! Recently, however, I started drawing blind contour in my little sketchbook. Why, I don't know..I can't account for why I appreciate it now...but I do!

This is the reservoir in Mt. Tabor Park...right next to where I live.

(I'm glad I hopped out of the car to "blind contour" sketch the Reservoir gatehouse...and I know my old drawing teacher would approve).

I added some paint to this oil study from awhile back. I may add some color next. It's an experiment.

Do you have paintings of your own....that you especially like? This is one of mine. It's from the past, but since I don't have a new painting, I thought it would be ok to re-post/re-visit this one. I like how there is so little specific in it...it's inexplicably dreamy.

Here is a sketch of another Sargent portrait to add to my Sargent project. Sargent painted over 900 paintings....so I could probably keep this up for years.

I went for a walk in the rain today. This is where I usually wind up...in Montavilla. It was a gloomy day.

....how's this for more gloom..a bride inexplicably left in a yard beyond Halloween. I'm photographing her. Ah...Portland!  I blame Grimm.

Puddle! What would Audrey Hepburn do ---yeah----she'd leap over this!

Audrey would have certainly have made a better calculation. I'll try again next walk (it's going to rain all week)! :)

Thats my day......how was yours??

An experiment with color. I might make a second pass tomorrow.

Looking around for something to do today I came across this start (probably from a year ago). I think it may be Sargent-inspired...but I don't remember what I originally used for a reference. I added more paint to it and just made stuff up. It's painted on Arches paper. I like the light and dark!

It was art discussion day .....this is the painting I took. The topic today was "style". To see what the other artists brought and read their thoughts (about style) go HERE.

An oil study. Big shapes, big shapes!

I stopped by Peterson Hall at Linfield College to see a photography exhibit

There is a cool sculpture of St. Francis (with his friends) out front

Lunch at Subway...Jesus was there having a sandwich and using his smart phone. This is Portland!
