Fechin in Seattle

Today we took our road trip to see the Nicolai Fechin exhibit at the Frye Museum in Seattle. We had a wonderful time, complete with breakfast, lunch and plenty of time in the car to discuss Fechin all the way there ....and all the way back.

Photographs weren't allowed of the paintings at the Museum..but you can learn more about Fechin in this great post by Matthew D. Innis HERE.  Slideshow below: (direct link to album: go HERE).

Spring has sprung!  Is it spring-like where you are?

I am doing some framing, so I used my outdoor studio today. Very pleasant. (It hardly even seemed like work, because it was so nice outside!)

Friday at Studio 30

We had a beautiful African-American model at Studio 30 today...everyone loved painting her!

At the end of the session I took all my still life paintings out of my locker (where I dry them..in the hall).  I planned to load them in the car and take them home, but Za convinced me to line them up first for a "little talk". (Translation: Za, Quin and Pam told me what they liked about them--and--boom!-- what they didn't like about them).

Well, watch out if they ever ask you to stay after hours... They are the like the Charlie's Angels of painting critique-ers! I survived ....but just barely.

Yes, cats are turning up in my work a lot lately. I have my reasons! This painting, entitled "Almost Home" is offered for auction at this year's Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon benefit/auction at the Portland Art Museum.  All the attendees of the gala benefit will have the opportunity to bid on (and win) the painting. The "Furball" is a popular event hosted by Meterologist Matt Zaffino. The event is May 4. To learn more, go HERE.

The Feral Cat Coalition is one of my favorite ("pet") organizations (pun intended). My policy is that I donate to two non-profits per year. Here are some great tips about Donating to Fundraisers (reprinted from FidelisArt; click to enlarge):

.......are you still reading? Yay! I went to the art meeting at O'Connors today (and it so happens...I took yet another cat painting!) to see it and all the other art that showed up for discussion....go HERE.

You might remember this red chair from awhile ago. I've painted a black Maxine-type cat onto the chair ...so that the chair won't be so lonely!  It also works out that this fits into the Lane Gallery's Reigning Cats and Dogs exhibit (that benefits the Oregon Humane Society).... opening May 3, 2013.

I had a wonderful conversation just yesterday with one of my artist friends.... we talked about how grateful we are to have our dog and cat companions...past and present. What wonderful friends they are, through thick and thin!

Friday at Studio 30

I had a great time at Studio 30 today. The day began with the still life session and in the afternoon we painted our model Tess. She held some flowers, and because I opted for a portrait I imagined a flower in her hair. To see what everyone else did today.....go HERE.

What's going on for you this weekend? Painting? Art appreciating? Kicking back? Whatever you are doing--I hope it's whatever you really like!

I painted this today in the afternoon. It didn't photograph exactly right, but I'm pretty happy with it and I'll take another photo tomorrow.

Earlier in the day Dave and I decided to go out to the Gorge Artists Open Studios
We visited with Cathleen Rehfeld.

Here she is, painting her beautiful paintings in her studio.

The Oregonian Arts & Entertainment section featured Cathleen's painting in an article about the Gorge Artists Tour. Very cool!

Next stop was Elizabeth See's 1930's cabin/studio on Orchard Road.
(Elizabeth and I have shown together at Lane Gallery)

Elizabeth's great grandfather was an artist, and he used this same cabin/studio.

Elizabeth's paintings were displayed inside and out.

While visiting Elizabeth, I had the great pleasure of running into another great friend (NancyRussell)!
(L to R, Nancy, me and Elizabeth)

It was a beautiful day! Hope yours was as fun too!

Unexpected things

I recently bought a pad of gessoed Arches paper. I've gessoed my own paper in the past, but this is much better.  I didn't really expect to like it....but I did. It's especially good for just thinking...(in oil sketches). Here are a few other random "unexpected things".....

Here is photo that I took last week of our "sleeping beauty" model at Studio 30. It's funny that she is texting in her yesteryear garb.

Tonight on our neighborhood walk these cats came running out to greet us. They seemed much more like dogs than like cats. Don't they know....cats are supposed to be aloof?

Finally, for an unexpected treat....watch this:

I made some adjustments to this still life today...... Happy new week, all!  What's on your docket?

Today was the 2nd day of Bowman's figure workshop. (To see photos from the workshop, go HERE).

One of the things Bowman said during the workshop sticks with me: "Any artist worth their weight will never stop learning. They can't ever say they know it all....They'll always strive to know more". (Well, that seems accurate...don't you agree?)

I am super happy to be in Eric Bowman's two-day figure workshop at Hansen's studio this weekend.  He gave a demonstration and then we did our own starts and studies from photos for the rest of the day. The time went by so fast! We all get to return tomorrow. To see a slideshow about today's workshop...go HERE.

I like this photo that Dave took Friday at Studio 30. I'm in the hall on the right taking photos for the blog while others are packing up to leave. (It is great fun to be the one taking the photos! In case you are interested, I use a Canon Powershot S95).

Ok now...that's me...what's going on with you?

Friday at Studio 30

I painted in two sessions at Studio 30 today. I didn't really finish either painting, but I had a wonderful time as always! To see what everyone else painted...go HERE. Happy weekend to you.

My blogging pal Gary Everest moved to Hawaii. I inherited his taboret. My "regular" studio is in the basement, but because the taboret has wheels, I can set up a painting station anywhere. Today I painted in the front room. Pretty cool!

Today was art discussion day. To see all the art that showed up...go here.

My dear old Toyota quit on the highway on the way back from the meeting....but she's in good hands now, and I'll get a diagnosis soon. I'm super-grateful for tow truck drivers and mechanics!

That was my day...how was yours?

Monday..."Fix your Painting Day"

Today we assembled at Karen Lewis' house for "Fix your Painting Day." It was satisfying to make changes to old paintings that  had been relegated to the eh stack. I worked on 4 paintings and think they are all better than they were. I still have some work to do on one in particular, but I especially liked how the new shadow in this painting seem to pull it together. To see all the results from the day ....go HERE.
