Monday!

Tonight I did a charcoal copy of a Sargent painting....I'll add this to my previous efforts (here). My, but didn't Sargent have lookers in his stable of models! I love the fabulous darks in almost all Sargent's paintings...it is so fun to put those blacks down!

Sketch, Celeste Bergin, Head of a Male Model (After Sargent), charcoal on 6x9 toned sketchbook

I too love the darks...they really provide a strong background for the drawing/painting. I struggle to get them in and when I don't, the painting is weak.

I commit myself to starting with the darks. Thank you Celeste.

Another great copy. I laughed at your remark on Sargent's "lookers." I wonder if he made them that way automatically - same as he made the contrasts more pronounced. I know he made the colors more beautiful when he used color and let's not forget how graceful women's hands became with his magic touch.

I'm caught up on all your posts. This reminds me of a looker (a dockworker) we hired to cut down our overgrown bamboo in MD. I invited my girl friends over to watch.

Very solid painting, Celeste!

Julie makes a good point...perhaps the models were "Sargentized"! :)

Thought about you last week when I was in Boston . . . the MOA was advertising it's Sargent collection, but I was unable to make time to check it out. Know you would have!

Sargent does get one back into black. To think we were taught to eliminate black from our palettes--probably due to Impressionistic paintings--is why so artists don't make their shadows dark enough, strong enough to establish on strong composition.
