This is a value study that I painted today with Ultramarine blue, transparent red oxide and white. I might do a color version next. I like how it turned out. 

Today was the last day to see the Lucinda Parker show at the Laura Russo Gallery. The paintings look absolutely great in such a beautiful space.

...and it's fairly impossible to resist sitting on the center bench.....(a perfect place to quietly take in the colors and shapes).

This Sargent sketch was so fun...I'm thinking of doing a painting version of it. 

Here I am sharing my corner "sketch station" with Mufasa. 

Earlier today Dave and I walked to Montavilla. Here he is taking a photo of a glove stuck on a stick in a yard.

Here's my Spitfire friend that I visit whenever we walk to Montavilla...  She's very much like my beloved Spitfire**. 

 (**'Honey' in her toasty dry garage...waiting for Summer!) I love her like a person!

It is rewarding to sketch from my big Sargent book...because I see over and over how Sargent used darks to draw interest and to hold shapes together. I'll add this to my Sargent project

Our art discussion group met today and the suggested topic was painting from memory or imagination. I don't do much of that..but I gave it a whirl (for the sake of the discussion).

Simple Pleasures!

When I first took drawing class (way back a zillion years ago) I had a thorough dislike for a method called 'blind contour drawing'. (Blind contour is drawing while looking at the subject and not looking at the paper). I remember the teacher would bellow "Blind Contour Everyone!"...and I would groan uugghhhh.  I suffered through those sessions, longing to look at my paper. I seldom liked the results. 

Well! Recently, however, I started drawing blind contour in my little sketchbook. Why, I don't know..I can't account for why I appreciate it now...but I do!

This is the reservoir in Mt. Tabor Park...right next to where I live.

(I'm glad I hopped out of the car to "blind contour" sketch the Reservoir gatehouse...and I know my old drawing teacher would approve).

Here is a sketch of another Sargent portrait to add to my Sargent project. Sargent painted over 900 I could probably keep this up for years.  

I went for a walk in the rain today. This is where I usually wind Montavilla. It was a gloomy day.'s this for more gloom..a bride inexplicably left in a yard beyond Halloween. I'm photographing her. Ah...Portland!  I blame Grimm.

 Puddle! What would Audrey Hepburn do ---yeah----she'd leap over this!

Audrey would have certainly have made a better calculation. I'll try again next walk (it's going to rain all week)! :)

Looking around for something to do today I came across this start (probably from a year ago). I think it may be Sargent-inspired...but I don't remember what I originally used for a reference. I added more paint to it and just made stuff up. It's painted on Arches paper. I like the light and dark!
