When I first took up plein air painting I stood in the front yard and painted the side entrance of Randy and Christel's house. (Their house is 'kitty corner' from me). If I were to paint this today, I think I'd paint it better and a lot differently. When I first saw this painting again (after all these years) I thought...ugh! that is terrible! But then, I gave it a second look and thought...Wait. It does suck....but there is something about it that doesn't suck. Maybe it just makes me think of Christel. She was a super special person. I like that sunshine on the awning. Christel was a bright light too.

I just love sketching the models that Sargent painted. Every face seems more lovely than the last. I never like to spend much time on these...and sometimes I come quite close to the original (resemblance-wise). This one was pretty close, but I was surprised to read the original was titled The head of an Italian boy. What?? This is a boy? (Well....there is simply no arguing with Sargent).
Tonight I did a charcoal copy of a Sargent painting....I'll add this to my previous efforts (here). My, but didn't Sargent have lookers in his stable of models! I love the fabulous darks in almost all Sargent's paintings...it is so fun to put those blacks down!

I had a dream recently. In it my arms were linked with others....and a voice clearly said "Everything is....... Relationship." When I woke from the dream I realized how true are those words! What would life be without our wonderful families, friends and even our pets. Then I thought further... about how Everything is Relationship applies to painting too. (I'm not the first to say it)! Without the correct relationships (the colors and values placed next to one another)...the painting won't work (at least, representationally). Once a painter understands relationship... things start falling into place.
Well, that's all I have to say today---except, thanks, dear reader, for OUR 'relationship'. Your color and value sits just right next to mine!

There is a woman in our art discussion group who paints 'made up' paintings. She just sits down and paints things that 'come to her'. I wanted to try that ........with the paint I had left over on my palette. I imagine this looks a little like me...(aside from the fact my skin isn't Shrek green)...yeah...I can sort of see me.
