Sunday (Day Two, Za Vue Workshop)

Today in Za Vue's workshop we worked on features. We painted from projected slides and from live models. Here the model had a red scarf on her head, but the session ended before I got to the headwear.

I learned about sculpting shapes...instead of rendering.

I really enjoyed the workshop. It was challenging and fun. Za is just the best!

Lunchtime at the Venetian...what did we talk about?  Guess?---(Painting!)

Saturday! (Za Vue Portrait Workshop)

Today was day one of Za Vue's two day portrait workshop. She gave a lecture, did a black and white demo and then we used some projected slides to paint value studies in black and white. She timed us, and we were not allowed to dither. We were looking for just three values, dark, mid-tone and light.

We had to paint fast and everyone agreed that the lack of time helped us. No time to worry about detail.

Later Za did a color mixing demonstration and a block-in demonstration. In the afternoon we had 2 live models. We all did two color block ins. (This is my 2nd one). Again, we were given time limits and this made us make quick and solid decisions.

At the very end we lined up as many of our studies and block-ins we could get on the tables and Za talked a bit more with us. It was a ton of things to think about. The color mixing demonstration in particular wowed me...but when I went to do it myself I found it challenging. I'll practice! Tomorrow is another day...I'm excited! Za is just a great teacher. :)

Last evening I participated in an art evening with friends. The idea was to paint in Lindy and Vicki's back yard.

There were plenty of subjects to chose from.  My intention was to paint 3 or 4 starts...but I spent too much time on a birdhouse. It didn't work out. Next, I whipped out a quasi-passable squirrel from a concrete sculpture. It was a fun time!

(L to R), Lindy, Vicki, Nila, Cam and me. (Dave, 'the paparrazi' was behind the camera).

(.....and "the paparazzi" couldn't resist this photo in a garden globe).

I went to Art Discussion on Thursday. The topic was "confidence". What an interesting meeting it was..with lots of ideas about staying positive. This is the painting I brought see what everyone else brought, go HERE.

I discovered today that Montavilla is a decent place to paint cityscape. I got to set up close to Bipartisan Cafe and directly next to my car.  It was super-hot weather today, so I put myself on the shady side of the street.

The meter maid came by once. The neighborhood barber came by. A guy on a bike asked me where the bike store is. (I didn't know).

Big highlight, my painting friend Joanne also came by....but she couldn't stay to paint.  Maybe next week. Want to join us?

I painted a rose earlier...and it so sucked, I ditched it!  I had plenty of paint leftover on my palette, so I painted this over an old painting. I painted it quickly and made it up. This coquettish miss just appeared, so I told her..."ok, I'll blog you".

I set up right outside my house on the sidewalk this afternoon. I wasn't out there for more than two minutes when my little neighbor called out: "Hey! whatcha doing? whatcha doing??"

"I'm painting that car in the you want to help me?" ..."Yeah!" (.....and he helped a lot )

Green glass is fun to paint. I painted this as a little exercise.

Dave and I went to the Oregon Convention Center today to check out the Ceramic Showcase. Here he is taking a photo of the giant swinging globe in the ceiling of the lobby.  Two women laid down right next to him on the floor (to look at the globe). I heard one say "This is how you get the full experience".

So I'll save you the trouble of laying on the lobby floor of the convention center... this is what the swinging globe looks like. (Thanks for the photos, Dave).

On the way back from the Convention center we happened on this statue located at the Oregon State Building in Lloyd Center. The figure has no face..but still she seems exultant. I have no idea what any of it means...but I confess, I like it.

Finally,  I met this neighbor-cat on our walk and I asked him if he wanted to come home with me. He said no.

That's my day---how is yours? :)
