Today was a beautiful day...perfect for a little ink sketching.

Here I am at Taggart & 17th

I used my favorite pocket-sized sketchbook.

I sketched at two additional round out the day.
Slideshow below. (Did you have a great holiday? I did!)

Friday (at Studio 30)

I painted at both sessions today at Studio 30. Our model wore a shawl and a black saucer-type hat.

This is an oil study that I did earlier in the day on Arches gessoed paper.  I meant to paint another larger version painting using this as a color guide...but I ran out of time!

To see what everyone else painted today..........go HERE.

Today's suggested discussion topic at the Art meeting was "darkest darks and black". This is one of the paintings I took in to share. To see what everyone else brought go HERE.

This is my BFF Sondra who moved to California (boo)! but came back for a visit (yay)! We had lunch yesterday at Alameda Cafe. It took twice as long to have lunch than usual and as you can see.....we were the last people there. (The waiter forgot to place our order!) Well, he was easy enough to forgive, because he did a good job of taking this picture and ......he looked a lot like Patrick Swayze).

No painting for me today, so I sketched this copy of a John Singer Sargent drawing. I enjoyed placing the big dark shapes.

A new day awaits us...what will we do with it? Whatever we do...let's make it fun!

I went to Eric Jacobsen's one-day still life workshop at Art on the Boulevard today. Eric had some of that new Arches paper (for painting) that everyone seems to be talking about. He gave me a sheet to try. I discovered that I like it. It seems like a nice surface for painting little studies. I'll buy some!

I did a 2nd painting on a panel, but that one tanked. It was a great workshop for me, nevertheless...lots of deep thought-provoking discussion together with some light-hearted banter. (Painting and learning alongside friends is the best!) Slideshow below:

The topic at our art discussion group today was "What do you do with old paintings (that you no longer want?)"  This is a painting I brought to the meeting that was painted several years ago (for a show that had a theme about Peace). I've always liked this painting, even though I don't paint like this now. Because of my fondness for it... it was spared from the Kilz experiment.

Here are a bunch of my paintings that are of no use to me. I decided to "repurpose" them by painting them over with Kilz.

I've never used Kilz before...but an artist I respect told me that it works great... (Zee fumes are strong and probably kilz off zee brain cells, so before long I moved zee operation to zee outdoors).

After only one coat, all traces of crappy paintings....gone!  I'll sand lightly and give them another coat tomorrow. New panels and canvases for new practice paintings!

In the evening I attended a Columbia River Art Group meeting. We all shared our most recent paintings. (Pretty much a perfect day!)

What about you.....what are you doing today?

No painting today...but I did get some sketching done over coffee at McDonalds on 82nd Avenue.

I love this photo that I took through a hand-held special effects filter at the Portland Art Museum last week. (This is Dave B holding up a paper cut-out of a camera). We saw the Carrie Mae Weems Exhibit.

I also helped Dave G put up some of his framed things onto the walls in his (new) apartment last week. Things on the walls make all the difference...(and I think I'd agree with that...even if I weren't often making things to go onto walls).

The topic of our art discussion meeting today was "the importance of gray". This is one of the paintings I took in. (It is my 1980's Coach messenger bag...still beautiful after all these years).

I meant to get back to the horse from yesterday, but I painted this from my left over grays instead. It's an imagination painting. (Confession, I may have been influenced by the fact that I've been watching some of the Jodi Arias trial. She has been telling the jury that her memory of the crime can be described as "foggy").

The initial idea was to paint a Chestnut horse...but I decided first painted it in black and white  (so I could get a sense for the values). I'll leave it here for tonight...and tomorrow I may or may not go to phase two.

This painting is an experiment in thick paint. I didn't paint it today,  I painted it awhile back from a previous oil study.

Today Dave and I took a drive. There was so much traffic on the Scenic Highway we had to drive at a snails' pace past Horsetail Falls (giving me the opportunity to stick my camera out the window to take this photo).

Before we knew it, we found ourselves in Hood River, so of course, we had to stop at the Columbia Art Gallery. We saw the Gorge Artist's Tour Preview Show and Karen Watson was there. She did these pastel demos earlier in the day. Her paintings laying in a huge box of pastels was a visual treat!

This is Karen...(she was manning the Gallery too).

I meant to paint outdoors somewhere during our outing...but I just didn't land on a spot. At the end of the day I dumped out my plein air backpack. Moofie thought he would be of help by sitting in the center of it. Yeah, very helpful, Moofie!

Hey, how is your weekend going?

Friday at Studio 30...with bonus Surprise Party

I painted in two sessions today at Studio 30.... and I was completely unaware while I painted our beautiful be-flowered model that my artist pals had hatched a secret party......for me!

I was flabbergasted! see, the message I received was that they appreciate the volunteer work that I do, (but it's never seemed much like work to me)!....I confess, however, that it sure was about the coolest thing EVER to have a party. I'm still pretty speechless--thanks to everyone!!

To see what the rest of the artists painted today, together with a slideshow of the day....go HERE

Today I went to the art discussion group at O'Connor's. We talked about marketing. One of the best suggestions made was to be sure to structure your week. None of that bumping-along stuff..... treat what you do as it is a job! (because, it is!)

To see what everyone brought to the meeting, go HERE.

I painted this awhile back, it is simply a from-imagination painting with left-over paint. I had taken the cat out, but I tonight I put it back in...more or less. (Is that a cat? ......"It is if you want it to be"). A few of my friends might recognize the inside joke there.

Monday, life session

I painted this today in a life-model session. Usually, I am shoulder-to-shoulder in a group of 10 -12 other painters, but today it was just two painters and our model. Super-pleasant and peaceful ....the time just flew by.
